Where Do Christmas Trees Come From? A Map of the US and Canada
More than half of the farm-grown Christmas trees cut in the US come from just two states: Oregon and North Carolina.
US farms cut 14,548,694 cultivated Christmas trees in 2022, according to the USDA’s 2022 Census of Agriculture. Oregon cut 4.8 million of them and North Carolina 3.2 million. Together they account for about 55% of the US total.
In Canada, the trees are concentrated in the east. Quebec and Nova Scotia hold nearly two-thirds of the country’s Christmas tree growing area.

Where Canada’s Christmas trees grow
Canada’s figures, from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s 2024 ornamental industry report, measure land planted in Christmas trees rather than trees cut. In 2021, the provinces reported about 20,500 hectares across roughly 1,360 farms.
- Quebec: 7,757 hectares, 37.7% of the national area, on 257 farms.
- Nova Scotia: 5,315 hectares, 25.9%, on 213 farms.
- Ontario: 3,258 hectares, 15.8%. Ontario had the most farms of any province, at 418, so its farms are smaller on average.
- New Brunswick: 2,344 hectares, 11.4%.
- British Columbia: 1,272 hectares, 6.2%, on 276 farms.
The Prairie provinces and Prince Edward Island each reported under 200 hectares. Newfoundland and Labrador reported a single farm, and its area wasn’t published. The territories don’t appear in the table.
How to read the numbers
“Withheld” is not zero. USDA withholds a figure, marked (D), when publishing it could reveal a single farm’s data. Alaska, Arizona and Nevada are withheld in 2022.
The US and Canadian maps measure different things. The US map counts trees cut in one year. The Canadian map shows hectares planted, which includes young trees that won’t be harvested for years. Compare states with states and provinces with provinces, but not one country with the other.
Cultivated trees only. These counts cover farm-grown trees. Trees cut from public forests or private woodlots don’t appear in the census.
Send the tree home
If you visit a tree farm this year, take a photo. A picture of the family wrestling a fir onto the car roof makes a better Christmas card than most of the ones you can buy in a store.
